PCMag’s labs also ran three graphics simulations, the popular and cutting-edge 3DMark, GFX Bench Pro, and the older Unigine Valley test.

This includes Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Total War: Warhammer II, the 2016 Hitman reboot, and Sid Meier’s Civilization VI.Īll the games were run at a resolution equivalent to full HD - 1,920 × 1,200 - to provide an accurate comparison since the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook displays have different native display resolutions.

There isn’t a huge catalog of Mac-compatible games to choose from, but thankfully, British developer Feral Interactive specializes in bringing games from top-notch development studios over to the Mac side. PCMagdecided to find out for themselves and put a 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro chip and a 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Max chip up against some of the most popular graphically intense games from recent years. Seeing how well they perform on CPU-intensive workflows when we reviewed the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros got us thinking: Are these seriously powerful new processors equally adept at running graphics-intensive AAA games? Tom Brant, PCMag
The question, then, is whether the insane level of power packed into the M1 Max can actually overcome the handicap of being ignored by game developers. In other words, when it comes to gaming, the new MacBook Pro is at a definite disadvantage. The downside to this is that while the M1 Pro/Max may provide the raw power to handle the latest games, game developers aren’t putting any real effort into macOS as a serious gaming platform, so games simply aren’t optimized to take advantage of the M1 architecture - and that’s not likely going to change any time soon. Unlike the kind of apps it shows off at its iPad and iPhone events, games were nowhere on the roster during last week’s Unleashed event.

Also, there are "hacked" AMD Radeon drivers for bootcamp that you can use to give a boost in performance ( ) if you want.To be fair, Apple makes it very clear that these new MacBook Pro laptops are for serious professional content creation. You can run Windows on Bootcamp for gaming, Metal (MacOS Graphics API - Like Direct X) is not very good (I can confirm on any Steam game that runs on both my Bootcamp and my MacOS that the Bootcamp version runs much better).

If you are still inclined in gaming on a MBP, I would you check out e-GPU's, since this would use an external card thus reducing the heat on the computer, as well as give you real gaming PC graphics capabilities. It's a great machine for work, but the proximity between the battery and very hot GPU and CPU don't mix very well. All due to the thermal dissipation really not being ideal for long hot sessions. I'm with 75% battery capacity with only 118 cycles and I'll have to replace my battery very soon. There was even a user here in the sub that had issues with battery expansion after a year of using his MBP for some intense gaming sessions, and, to be very honest, mine is also a little swollen in the bottom. Well, I have a similar spec and I do not recommend it for gaming.
